Aglianico
Southern Italy's Nebbiolo equivalent — tannic and ageworthy.
Aglianico is the noble red of southern Italy, planted mostly in Campania (Taurasi DOCG) and Basilicata (Aglianico del Vulture). It produces deeply colored, intensely tannic, high-acid reds that often need 5-10 years of aging to balance. The grape ripens very late — often into November — and demands warm volcanic sites. Black cherry, leather, and a savory bay-leaf note recur in tasting profiles. Sometimes nicknamed the Barolo of the south.
