Grenache / Garnacha
Heat-loving GSM blender; Châteauneuf and Priorat backbone.
Grenache thrives in heat and drought — Spain (where it is called Garnacha), Southern Rhône, Sardinia, and Australia all build wines around it. The grape produces pale, high-alcohol, spice-laced reds with red-cherry and dried-strawberry fruit, low tannin, and a tendency to oxidize, which makes oak management crucial. Old-vine Garnacha from Aragón and Priorat reaches enormous concentration; Southern Rhône blends it with Syrah and Mourvèdre for balance. Grenache also makes some of the world's best dry rosés, especially in Provence and Tavel.
